Welcome to the SIS Country Comparison WIKI
You are going to produce a project on a country from the list below. There is a table showing who is studying which country at the bottom of this page.
Your project will
- investigate the country’s landscape, climate, population, economy and culture using a range different sources.
- Use data to illustrate what life is like in your country and how life has changed in your country in the last 100 years.
- Use the information you have collected to discuss your countries level of development and compare it to the countries researched by your classmates.
This is an assessed project so make sure you complete all of the tasks on this WIKI. Completing the tasks will help you collect and understand the information. The tasks are deigned to guide you through your research and help you plan your essay.
-
The project will be in the form of a written report of no more than 1000 words.
-
It must contain maps, graphs and other relevant photographs and illustrations.
-
You must use data to show how developed your country. The best projects will highlight problems with the data, for example where one data set suggests a country is more developed and another that suggests it is less developed.
-
You project will also compare your country’s data to the data for some of the other countries being studied.
-
The data for all of the countries will be available in this spreadsheet. Make sure you add your country’s data as you work through the tasks.
-
Use the data from the spreadsheet to create graphs that allow a clear comparison of the country’s being studied. You do not have to use all the data or make comparison to all of the countries. The countries you chose for comparison and the data you decide to use shows me how well you understand the work.
More information about the essay and what you should include can be found here. You will also find a copy of the rubric I use for marking the project. It is important that you look carefully at the instructions and the rubric.
Project deadline: Monday 9th April.
Hand in a printed copy during your lesson to either Mr B or Mr McCready
Email a digital copy to mrbgeography22@gmail.com with the subject, “Country Comparison Essay.”
What information will be on the WIKI?
There will be a wide range of information on the WIKI. You will be able to find maps, photographs and much more by following the links from this WIKI.
The tasks I have included are there to guide you through your research. Whilst I recommend that you complete them I will not be assessing your answers. Completing the tasks will make the writing of your report easier.
Maps, Graphs and other Data Visualisation tools:
1. Maps
You won’t be able to do this project without creating at least one map of your country. They way that you go about this is up to you. You may want to…….
-
use Google Maps or Google Earth to create digital maps, tours, overlays etc. You can embed digital resources into your presentation or take screen shots to use in your poster.
-
download blank map outlines and edit them using programs such as Paint.net
-
print out the maps, edit them by hand.
2. Graphs and other Visualisation tools.
The Web is full of fantastic tools that will help you make your project more visual. These are just a few of the best.
Gapminder is so good I will introduce you to it in class.
The KML Factbook allows you to visualize data from the CIA fact book on both Google Earth and Google Maps.
ArcGIS is a very powerful Geographical Information System (GIS) that allows you to create digital maps with a huge range of data at almost any scale.
Drag and drop countries around the map to compare their relative size.
